Templater hangs when performing layout during preview
-
Howdy all,
I am having difficulty getting Templater to complete its preview function. Changing footage layers completes fine, but doesn’t go all the way through the Layout phase. This leads me to believe there is nothing wrong with the data source (Google Sheets), and that the column headers and corresponding layers are labelled correctly in AE.
I have tried double-checking all layers with the Templater effect and making sure there aren’t any contradictory/conflicting settings, and the Layout phase still hangs.
I have found, however, that another project using the same source does go through its complete Preview function. So I am currently focusing on the one project that is having issues, but can’t seem to pinpoint exactly which pre-comp/layer is causing the preview to hang.
I have tried restarting AE, as well as my machine and had the same results.
Not sure where to proceed with troubleshooting from here, and I am happy to provide the templater.out file if needed. I attempted to copy the log report text directly into the post form and was denied as spam.
Thanks all for any insight you can provide!

It would probably be better if you could open up a ticket with us at support@dataclay.com as sometimes the templater.log file can contain sensitive information. That being said, our first step would probably be to check that log out to see if we can figure out what’s causing the hang-up.
Here are a few other things that might cause the layout function to get locked up that you can check. First, I’d suggest looking at/disabling any Expressions that you might be running on layers. A logic problem in an Expression can certainly cause a hang like the one you’ve described.
Another thing to check would be to make sure that you don’t have any audio layers that have visual adjustments like Attachment or Scaling. Since audio layers don’t have a visual component, that can also cause this type of error.
Obviously, those are just general suggestions, so if you still run into issues, send your templater.log file over to support@dataclay.com, and we’ll take a look. Thanks!

I stumbled on the issue, in case others find themselves in a similar situation:
I had a layer with the Templater effect that was thrown outside its comp’s timeline. Whether this was a result of user error, or I had deleted a layer and forgot to update the effect settings, I am not sure.
Once I found the culprit layer, I deleted it, re-created the layer, and re-applying the Templater effect. This caused it to behave normally again.
I wish I knew the cause of the issue that made the layer appear outside of the comp’s timeline so I could avoid it in the future. But, for now, this gives me something to look out for in case the issue pops up again.
