Templater Bot can output in one of two ways, either replication (.aep replicates that can be passed to AME) or rendering. To choose which method Templater Bot will default to, head to the Templater Preferences panel and use the “Bot Settings” checkboxes to select Render, Replicate, or both. That should determine how Templater Bot outputs files when enabled.

Hopefully, that answers your question, but if you have any further concerns, please feel free to let us know.

        Thanks!

Are you using a third-party plugin to enable .mp4 output support with After Effects? As noted previously in this thread, After Effects cannot output .mp4 files by default. It can output .aep replicates that can be processed by Adobe Media Encoder, but unless you’re using a third-party plugin like AfterCodecs, After Effects can’t render directly to .mp4.

As for what happens when you enable Templater Bot, that should be controlled by the checkboxes I outlined in my previous reply. If Templater Bot is outputting .aep files, you’ll need to uncheck “Replicate” and check “Render” in the “Bot Settings” section of the Templater Preferences.

I wanted to drop in on this subject, as my company is currently test running Templater for a big custom video project we are about to launch. I am on the trial version and I’m loving it so far, but I had this same question. For my test case, I’m doing a batch render of a template video with ~300 dealership names being swapped out from a CSV. We need to get the videos down to the smallest mp4 possible and I was curious as to what the best method would be for efficiency. I looked into AfterCodecs, but the downside there is the special MP4 option it adds to the Render dropdown is not included in the Output Module dropdown of Templater.

I’m hoping to find a seamless way to output those as MP4, but it’s looking like either rendering then converting, or just using CLI is the best bet for this? Does anyone have experience with this?

Thanks for reaching out. Templater should have access to all of the Render Settings and Output Modules options available to After Effects. That is to say that if you can manually add a project to the Render Queue and select the AfterCodecs output method, it should be available in Templater.

If you’re only seeing a single option under the Render Settings and Output Module section of the Templater panel, you might try clicking on the button that says “Load Settings & Module Templates”.

It might also be necessary to create a new Output Module under Edit>Templates>Output Module that uses the AfterCodecs output method before Templater can read it. As I understand it, AfterCodecs doesn’t create one by default, so that might be needed to get things working.

If that doesn’t work, it might be easier to reach out to us at support@dataclay.com. Let us know how it goes, and we’ll do what we can to get everything squared away. Thanks!

@jeff AMAZING! Thank you for such a quick response! Got it working now. I was just able to pump out a list of 150 dealerships to Youtube ready MP4’s in just over 20 mins… Templater fricking rules. You can expect a new customer within a week or so!
